500 new trees planted in North Oxford!

Over 100 people joined us on a bright and frosty Saturday morning to plant more trees in North Oxford, as part of National Tree Week. As one of them said – “What a great way to start the day”! Thank you to everyone who came, to Oxford Direct Services who organised the trees and oversaw the event, and to International Tree Foundation, who funded the trees.

Michael Woods from Oxford Direct Services’ Parks Team was up early to prepare the site at Sunnymead Park, and the first volunteers arrived shortly before 10. Soon the park was busy with people of all ages and, under Michael’s expert supervision, 500 trees were planted in record time.

National Tree Week starts 23 November – help us plant more trees in North Oxford!

We are delighted to have secured funding for 500 trees from the International Tree Foundation. Come and help us plant them!

When? Saturday 30 November, from 10am until about 1pm.

Where? Sunnymead Rec Ground (next to Cutteslowe Community Centre, Wren Road).

Please share with your family and friends – all ages are welcome, no experience necessary, and children are encouraged to help!* Turn up any time from 10am and we will guide you to the exact site. Please bring sturdy shoes and gloves. We will provide cake, hot drinks, trees and equipment.

Oxford Direct Services’ Landscape and Countryside team will be there to oversee the planting and provide advice and help. We will plant a mix of native trees, including oak, hazel, silver birch, sweet cherry, European spindle, wayfaring tree, and whitebeam. Want to talk about Climate Change? Come to our next Climate Cafe on 27 October for a friendly chat and cake

Our next cafe is at 15.30 to 17.00 on Sunday 27 October at the Bicycle Shed, 204-206 Banbury Road (opposite Thorncliffe Road and next to Summertown Cycles).

We think our Climate Cafes offer something different from the usual gatherings of people with interests in climate change. They are facilitated – so you can be sure that there will be space for you to speak. They are not designed to recruit you to do anything or to put you under any pressure. The idea behind them is that talking about climate change is really important – but it is often made more difficult by our feelings of guilt that we are not doing enough, or frustration that others are not doing enough. So we provide a space in which we don’t talk about what we or others are doing or should be doing. We just talk about climate change and how it is making us think and feel. Everyone is welcome.

‘Old houses, new houses – thoughts on sustainable homes’

We are delighted to announce a public meeting followed by our AGM, at the Baptist Church, Woodstock Road (corner of Beechcroft Road) on Wednesday 3 July at 7pm (doors open 6.30pm).  The evening is open to everyone, so do invite friends. We’d appreciate it if you would RSVP via Eventbrite.

Our theme for this meeting is Cosy Homes Oxfordshire – the new local home energy efficiency retrofit service. Our headline speaker, Charlie Luxton, is an architectural designer and TV presenter who writes and speaks about the environment and sustainable architecture (see article below). His practice Charlie Luxton Design is based in North Oxfordshire and specialises in sustainable housing.

We will also hear from a representative from the Cosy Homes Oxfordshire service and there will be plenty of opportunity to ask questions and find out more about the new service.

These discussions will be followed by our Annual General Meeting.

Roads Are for People: a public meeting with Andrew Gilligan

LCON is holding a major public meeting in  Oxford Town Hall’s Assembly Room, on Tuesday 2 October. The main speaker will be Andrew Gilligan, who recently wrote the report ‘Running out of Road’, commissioned by the National Infrastructure Commission. The report details the need for ambitious investment in cycling in Oxford.

The meeting is financially supported by Cyclox, the Civic Society and the University of Oxford, to whom we are very grateful.

This event aims to bring together all the groups and concerned citizens looking for a sustainable 21st century approach to transport in our city. We intend to create a clear manifesto and action plan – and a coalition to take the work forward.

We hope that as many LCON members and supporters as possible will attend. The address is Town Hall, St Aldate’s, Oxford OX1 1BX. The event is free and there is disabled access. Doors open at 18.30 for a 19.00 start.

We advise that you reserve your seat in advance via Eventbrite, because there is significant interest in the meeting and we cannot guarantee entry without a ticket.

Public meeting, 18 April: Air quality in North Oxford – what can we do?

Please come to our public meeting on Wednesday 18 April. Our guest speaker at this meeting is Dr Tim Chatterton, who will be talking, among other things, about the Claircity project that he has been involved in. This is about citizen-led interventions to improve air quality, hence the title for his talk: What can we do?

We will start with an update from Allen Shaw on what is happening to monitoring air pollution in Oxford.

The event is part of our work to help inform people in Oxford about the air quality situation, how it is affecting our health and what we can do about it. We are hoping, also, that better informed citizens will result in extra pressure on Oxford City Council to introduce effective policies.

We look forward to seeing our supporters and friends there – it is free and there will be ample time to ask questions and network.
