In 2024 Low Carbon Oxford North (LCON) ran the Oxford Car Free Challenge in partnership with climate charity Possible and the Centre for Climate Change and Social Transformations (CAST). A diverse group of 12 people who normally drive tried alternative forms of transport for three weeks. They were supported by project officers with journey planning, equipment hire, discounts and training.
We have been delighted with the outcome – the participants (mostly) really enjoyed the experience, most reported feeling healthier and happier. 10 out of the 12 say they will continue to reduce their car use. Here’s a short video recording their experience, and you can also read their individual stories here.
Findings and recommendations for action
Detailed findings from the project are presented in this report. These highlight the motivations for, and benefits of, reducing car use, the barriers to greener travel in Oxford, and what types of support can help.
The report also includes a list of recommendations for local policy and decision makers and other organisations, in many cases supporting the measures developed through the Central Oxfordshire Travel Plan. They highlight the following five priorities for local action:
- Ensure that information about the alternatives to private car use in the local area is easily accessible in one place.
- Ensure key walking routes, like those to education and leisure facilities and workplaces, are designed to be safe and appealing; and ensure a greater variety of safe cycle routes protected from traffic, including to edge-of-town destinations such as supermarkets and sports & leisure facilities, and nearby towns and villages.
- Improve the reliability of local buses through bus priority measures. Ensure that apps and timetables are accurate and easy to use.
- Consider introducing a support service for residents to get one-to-one help and advice for car free travel.
- Practical and financial support, including cycle training, cycle servicing, discounted tickets, and ways to make cargo bikes more affordable or accessible.
